Intermediate Course in Group Psychotherapy

This is a one year course taking place over ten weekend blocks and is for students who have completed an Introductory Course and who want to develop their understanding of Group Analysis and apply it within their work. It also supports those who may wish to apply for the IGA Qualifying Course in Group Analysis at a later date.

Syllabus

Personal Group Analysis: Students will be in therapy throughout the year. This experience is confidential and supports an understanding of group processes. There are five therapy groups each weekend.

Supervision/Work Group Reflection: Students will receive supervision on their existing groupwork or be helped to set up a group within their work context. Alternatively there is the possibility of reflecting on group dynamics in other contexts for those not running a group.

Seminars: There will be theoretical input building on the Introductory Course, to allow students to develop their understanding of groups. There will also be tutorial input to support those wishing to continue training by joining the Qualifying Course.

Large Group Experience: There are two large groups each course weekend which explore the dynamics of large group processes and which encourage a dialogue between the personal and wider social and political issues.

Assessment

There is a minimum attendance requirement of 80% for students on the course. Completion of the written assessment will lead to the Intermediate Course Certificate.

Interviews for the Course are in two parts — one professional and one personal. Your small group conductor will be asked to provide a reference.
