Foundation Course in Group Analysis
A self-contained one year course, running on Friday afternoons and part of Saturday over ten block weekends. It is intended for professionals from many fields who are interested, and involved in groups, including naturally occurring groups in their professional work.

The Institute of Group Analysis (London) and the Northwest Institute of Dynamic Psychotherapy as a prerequisite to their advanced training courses for qualification as a psychotherapist. (UKCP Registration)

Syllabus
The course aims to provide a foundation for the practice of group psychotherapy and an understanding of group dynamics. This approach focuses on understanding the individual in the context of the group. Teaching in the theory and practice of group psychotherapy is linked with the opportunity to experience group processes directly. Participants have a group analytic experience in a stranger group of nine to twelve people. In addition, they also participate in a large group experience which involves all the students and staff from the integrated courses.
Experienced group analysts conduct the groups. In addition, participants are members of a seminar group.
Group Analysis Graduate Certificate
Students enrolled on the Manchester Foundation Course will have the option of obtaining a Graduate Certificate offered by Birkbeck College University of London. Applications for this must be made via Birkbeck’s online application process (full details of which can be found on the

Students will write three essays over the year and will be required to keep a reflective diary. The full handbook is available online. There is an additional fee of £381.00

Course participants come from a wide range of backgrounds;
Health: nurses, doctors, therapists
Education: psychologists, pastoral teachers, education welfare officers, youth workers, university & school counsellors
Social Services: social workers, counsellors, group workers
Others: clergy, business personnel
Course Goals
On completing the course the student will be able to: use the group to support the goals of both the group and the individual members; involve group members to actively support and work with each other; clarify the importance of creating clear structures for effective functioning; work effectively at the boundary of a system such as a group; understand group processes; Understand basic psychological theories of development and the theory and practice of psychotherapy and; recognise the potential to use group therapy in a variety of settings.
What to do after the course
The Course serves as a training requirement for entry to the following courses in Manchester:
Intermediate Course in Group Analysis: aimed at furthering the practice of clinicians in group analysis.
IGA Qualifying Course in Group Analysis: A major training course , comprising of 10 weekend blocks a year, over four years and leading to membership of The Institute of Group Analyst (London) plus UKCP registration.
The North West Institute of Dynamic Psychotherapy Certificate: A major training course in individual and group analysis leading to membership of the Institute of Dynamic Psychotherapy plus UKCP registration.

Applicants will be invited to attend a preliminary group interview in May, June, or July.
